Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Rating: 10/10
Runtime 143 minutes

Many uninspired films begin with a sparkling gem of an inspiration. "Pirates of the Caribbean" started with a ride at the Disney theme park.

Usually, it is the other way around. Disney makes a hit movie. Then they figure out how to make a theme ride out of the movie.

Yet, as fortune would have it, Disney not only hit a home run with this concept, but rather, knocked it out of the park entirely.

"Pirates of the Caribbean" was Walt Disney's last ride that he oversaw before his death. I would not want to be the employee to smirch his legacy with a terrible movie.

They did this by not exactly ignoring the ride, but by not being constrained by the ride, and simply sprinkling references to the ride throughout the movie, then going back and sprinkling references to the movie throughout the revised ride.

The film is awash with thrilling swashbuckling action, featuring sword fights, daring escapes, and hair-raising sea battles that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

The narrative also weaves in a classic romantic subplot. A beautiful damsel finds herself in a romantic quandary, with two men - a budding pirate and a noble officer - vying for her affection, adding a further layer of intrigue to the plot.

And of course, what pirate tale would be complete without a ghost ship?

Yet amidst these elements, the true star of the show is undeniably Jack Sparrow. His character shines as the definitive pirate - roguish, clever, and impossibly charming. Depp's performance is nothing short of brilliant.

Johnny Depp plays Jack Sparrow, an eccentric and whimsical pirate who is a captain without a ship. What do you call a captain without a ship? If it were anyone else, you might call them "a captain on dry land." But there is nothing dry about Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow.

This is a movie that, much like its protagonist, boldly sets its course and follows it with confidence and flair, (only to change course if the currents or wind change, which they do frequently) resulting in a cinematic experience as unforgettable as the ride that inspired it.
