The Retirement Plan (2023)

Rating: 5/10
Runtime 103 minutes

In the 2023 release, "The Retirement Plan," Ashley and her young daughter Sarah find themselves entangled in a perilous criminal enterprise that threatens their lives. To survive, Ashley reaches out to her estranged father, Matt, who has been living out his days as a beach bum in the Cayman Islands. The plot does indeed hold promise on paper, and it immediately conjures images of a thrilling, emotional rollercoaster ride.

Despite the potential, "The Retirement Plan" ends up as another highly forgettable assassin movie. It's a shame, really, considering the talent involved. Nicholas Cage, for instance, is an actor with an impressive range and a knack for portraying complex characters. Unfortunately, Cage's involvement in this film seems driven more by his well-publicized financial woes than a desire to create a memorable movie experience.

I can't help but wonder, does Cage believe that starring in a series of box-office flops will somehow help offset his tax debts? Is there some obscure IRS loophole that allows for writing off the losses against what's owed? If so, it's a strategy as misguided as the plot of this ill-conceived film.

Cage, and indeed the audience, deserves better than 'The Retirement Plan.' It's a film that promised so much yet delivered so little, another regrettable addition to the burgeoning sub-genre of forgettable assassin flicks.
