Bottoms (2023)

For a movie primarily about sex, there is a surprising lack of nudity.

Rating: 6/10
Runtime 91 minutes

In the film "Bottoms" (2023), we are thrust into a coming-of-age tale that is both a feminist Fight Club and a tongue-in-cheek exploration of teenage sexuality. It's a bold, audacious narrative that doesn't take itself too seriously, and for that, it deserves kudos.

Our story revolves around two lesbian friends, outsiders in their high school, who embark on a quest to lose their virginity before graduation. Their plan? To inspire all the women in their school to band together, build each other up with a sisterly love forged through deception about their pasts and, here's the kicker, physical combat. Yes, you read that correctly. This unlikely duo establishes an on-site school fight club. It's a plot twist that is so outrageous, it merits repeating for the sheer audacity of it.

In a lucky turn of events, the school's headmaster remains blissfully ignorant of the all-girl fight club, despite the increasing number of bruises and band-aids cropping up amongst the student body. It's only when the school's star quarterback accidentally falls victim to an errant punch that the headmaster finally takes notice.

While the plot is certainly unique, one can't help but question the likelihood of such a scenario. However, the film's underlying question remains: Will our two foul-mouthed, lying lesbian protagonists ever succeed in their mission to score with their straight crushes? You'll have to watch "Bottoms" to find out.

Despite its brazen narrative and cheeky humor, "Bottoms" is a film that ultimately champions unity, empowerment, and acceptance. It's a wild ride that will undoubtedly leave audiences with plenty to contemplate.

What's the deal with "Bottoms"? I go into this movie, right, expecting—based on the title alone—maybe a cheeky adventure, a little risqué humor, perhaps a glimpse of the human form in its natural state. But what do I get? Not a single naked bottom in the entire movie. Not one! What's that about?

The directorial debut of Jeymes Samuel shows that even westerns, a seemingly by-the-book genre, can be injected with freshness and diversity. With a predominantly black cast as cowboys is a refreshing take on the genre and might entice those who enjoyed the unique and distinctive style of "Bottoms". It's heavy on the music and sports a stylized, Tarantino-esque aesthetic you might appreciate.

Licorice Pizza (2021):

Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, this coming-of-age film is set in the San Fernando Valley of the 1970s. The narrative, revolving around a high school student and his relationship with an older woman, shares the tender and witty sensibility of "Bottoms". The performances by the lead actors earned critical acclaim, and you might find it similarly compelling.

West Side Story (2021):

This film is a remake of the 1961 movie of the same name, directed by Steven Spielberg. Although it's a musical, the narrative explores the depths of the human condition and societal conflict, much like "Bottoms". Plus, the vibrant cinematography and gripping performances may appeal to you.
