The Worst Person in the World (2021)

Rating: 4/10
Runtime 128 minutes

The title of the film, "The Worst Person in the World," could easily lead you down the wrong path. It's not a film about the worst person in the world. Don't let the light-hearted title fool you into thinking this is a romantic comedy or a black comedy.

Rather, at its heart, this is a melancholic tale about an individual who struggles to commit to one career or one life partner. The protagonist, Julie, flits from career path to career path, and love interest to love interest, in a seemingly endless cycle.

The movie zeroes in on Julie and her troubled love life. The reasons behind Julie's consistent shift from one man to another aren't entirely clear. Could it be ADHD? Or perhaps she's grappling with unresolved father abandonment issues?

Regardless of Julie's many missteps, she is certainly not the worst person in the world. While she may feel like she is, her character reflects the reality of many people. Julie is deeply flawed, just like most of us. She's uncertain of what she truly wants, which is a sentiment many can relate to. She jumps from one interest to another in a manner that might seem slightly narcissistic, but is wholly human.

The film is likely to resonate with anyone who has struggled to find their Mr. Right or Ms. Right in today's world, where choices are abundant and immediate. However, if you're not in the mood for a deeply poignant, brutally realistic drama about one woman's turbulent love life, you might want to give this movie a pass.
