"Sisu" is a Finnish film. It has beautiful cinematography. It has non-stop action. The casting is perfection. The acting is superb. It is only let down a little bit by the utter absurdity of the premise. An ex-soldier survives by pure willpower in the midst of World War 2. He survives being shot at by submachine guns. He survives being shot at by a 0.50 caliber gun. He survives being shot at by a tank. He survives being blown up by a land mine. He survives being drowned. And all of that occurs in the first half of the movie. I won't give away what death-defying stunts the ex-soldier survives in the second half of the movie. Suffice to say, if you find the first half of the movie hard to believe, the second half really stretches credulity. Other than that minor little quibble, this is a gripping and tense action movie. It is the Nazi revenge movie we didn't know we needed. As long as you don't mind all the blood and guts it is incredibly watchable.

Warning: The following may contain spoilers:What's the deal with the movie "Sisu"? I mean, here we have a film where it seems the main requirement for the historical consultants was just a thorough knowledge of every action movie ever made! Jalmari Helander has turned history into his own personal playground with this blood-and-guts revenge fantasy. It's like history class with more blood splatter and fewer dates to remember.
And let's talk about the action here. If you're not hung up on minor details like the plausibility of using a body as a human shield against .50 caliber rounds, or the biology behind breathing through a sliced trachea, then this might be right up your alley. This film doesn’t just stretch the imagination, it takes it on a full-blown Olympic sprint.
