Toy Story (1995)
Having watched "Toy Story" (1995) on multiple occasions, particularly if you've raised kids in the last few decades, one can't help but see the film through a different lens. At first glance, it seems to be a straightforward narrative about jealousy and redemption. We're introduced to Woody, the beloved cowboy doll who feels threatened and envious when a new and modern spaceman figure, Buzz Lightyear, usurps his position as the favorite toy in a young boy's room.
However, delving deeper into the story, there's an evident emergence of darker themes. The toys are portrayed as sentient beings who, despite their cognition, consider themselves inferior to humans. They are committed to their role of serving and entertaining their human owners, hiding their intelligence and willingly allowing the humans to manipulate them as they please. Which can easily be interpreted as a metaphor for oppressive societal structures such as slavery and patriarchy.
Woody, the old toy, is a significant enforcer of this tyranny. He benefits from the established order and attempts to force Buzz into subservience, who initially believes himself to be an actual spaceman. After Woody accidentally loses one of his owner's toys, his quest to retrieve it results in an unexpected friendship with Buzz. However, this friendship seems to lead Buzz to accept the same 'bondage and servitude' that the other toys live under.
Whenever a toy dares to question the feudalistic caste system, Woody is always there to romanticize their servitude, presenting it as an ideal state. He appears to enjoy his role as the overseer of the subjugated toys.
It's important to remember that "Toy Story" is primarily a children's film, so these adult themes are incredibly subtle. Perhaps these observations are merely a result of over-analysis, or maybe they're the product of weak writing.

Toy Story 2 (1999)
