The Italian Job (2003)

Rating: 7/10
Runtime 111 minutes

"The Italian Job" is an incredibly stylish heist movie with a star-studded cast.

But let's be real. The true stars of the movie are the Mini Coopers.

The Minis are so cool; they even get their own theme song, Timo Maas - Get Down.
The Mini Coopers are no mere product placements. They featured heavily in the original '69 film of the same name and are integral to the plot.

Things have changed from 1969, however, and this remake is a deliberately modern take on the old classic.

We have an empowered female who can best any male. We have the tech geek who can hack any system.

And in a nod to the original, we have one English actor who starts to smoke a cigarette but then is dissuaded by a "smoking kills" sign. OK, it's a barely perceptible nod.

Like all good heist movies, the plan is overly complex, which creates plenty of room for plot twists and turns.

Like most good heist movies, there are also plenty of twists and turns for the Minis as well.

Without giving too much away, the movie basically comes down to the Mini Coopers racing the rally of their lives.

The only disappointing thing about the movie is the ending is perhaps a little too neat, and the bad guys are a little too one-dimensional.

"I never look inside."

You should not watch The Italian Job (2003) if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "The Italian Job"? I mean, it's a movie with more Mini Coopers than a suburban mom's carpool line-up. And let's be honest, when you think of a high-speed chase, a Mini Cooper isn't exactly the first car that comes to mind. It's like watching a horde of angry hamsters trying to pull off a daring heist.

Also, did anyone else notice that the movie is called "The Italian Job", but most of it takes place in Los Angeles? It's like calling a movie "The Parisian Adventure" and filming it entirely in Nebraska. I mean, c'mon, even the pizza delivery guy knows you can't pass off a Chicago deep dish as an authentic Italian pie!
