Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)

You will get the most out of it if you read the book first.

Rating: 7/10
Runtime 157 minutes

In "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (2005), the young wizard finds himself caught up in a perilous tournament that pits rival magic schools against each other. Yet, his focus is continually undermined by disturbing dreams that resurface again and again.

"Goblet of Fire" is not the worst film in the Harry Potter series, but it happens to be the one I dislike the most, echoing my sentiments towards the "Chamber of Secrets". It's an overblown film, adhering too rigidly to the original text, and featuring some of the more mediocre performances in the entire series. It's even more disheartening because we've already seen the potential this franchise holds. All the necessary elements were there for Newell to create a truly remarkable film, but he plays it safe and refrains from taking any risks. There's a lack of innovation and surprise in the film, with everything just as predictable as in the "Chamber of Secrets," albeit with better special effects and a considerably larger budget.

Matching the lackluster direction of Newell is Patrick Doyle's uninspiring score. Doyle, a skilled composer, has delivered some phenomenal soundtracks in the past, but in a film that spans over 2 and a half hours, I expect more than just one remotely intriguing theme. There's hardly anything in the film that's downright terrible, but overall, it feels lackadaisical and obligatory. It's as if Mike Newell is a chef who has inherited a superior chef's recipes. Sure, the food tastes okay, but there's a certain spark that's missing.

You should not watch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"? It's like the world's most complicated plan to capture Harry. Couldn't they have turned his broom or his bed at Hogwarts into a portkey? Imagine that—Harry just hops on his Nimbus 2000 for a quick spin around the Quidditch pitch, and the next thing he knows, he's at a Death Eater rally. "Whoops, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque!" And his bed? He goes to sleep in Gryffindor Tower and wakes up in a graveyard. "Good morning, Harry. Hope you're well-rested for your duel." But no, we've got a plan that involves a magical tournament, impersonation, and a series of tasks that are more elaborate than my attempt to cancel a gym membership. "Yes, I'd like to cancel my membership. First, survive the dragon. Next, dive into the lake. Finally, navigate the maze." It's like Voldemort decided capturing Harry should be an Olympic sport. "Let's make this interesting. How about a triathlon, but make it magical and unnecessarily lethal?" Only in the Wizarding World, folks.
