Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)

You will get the most out of it if you read the book first.

Rating: 6/10
Runtime 146 minutes

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," the penultimate film in the Harry Potter series, finds our beloved trio, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, in a desperate race against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes. On this nerve-wracking journey, they discover the existence of the Deathly Hallows, the three most formidable artifacts in the wizarding world.

Watching this film, I was reminded of a childhood experience. As a kid, I’d often crave a second bowl of ice cream, and on special occasions, my mom would oblige. But as it turns out, too much of a good thing isn't necessarily enjoyable. In my excitement, I'd consume too much ice cream and then regret not sticking to just one bowl. This is essentially how I felt watching The Deathly Hallows. As a Harry Potter fanatic, I was initially thrilled with the in-depth exploration of the story, but eventually, it felt like an overdose.

The grandeur of the second part of the Deathly Hallows is appreciated, as is the intimacy of the first. Yet, it feels like an overload of ice cream – too much to handle. Despite an otherwise solid effort by director David Yates and his team, I can't help but wish for a shorter, simpler finale. The six-hour finale, in my opinion, would have been more impactful had it been condensed into a crisp, three-hour spectacle.

Another puzzling aspect of the film was the decision to replace Nicholas Hooper, the previous composer, with Alexandre Desplat. Desplat may have an impressive resume, with successful scores like Fantastic Mr. Fox to his credit, but his contribution to this film was underwhelming. His presence was only notably felt towards the end, where he reused themes from John Williams' earlier work. This move, though not detrimental, did little to enhance the film's overall appeal. To sum up: while "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" is a solid effort, it could have been more impactful with a leaner runtime and a more potent musical score.
