Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)

You will get the most out of it if you read the book first.

Rating: 5/10
Runtime 130 minutes

The final installment of the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (2011), captures the desperate search of Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they hunt for the last of Voldemort's Horcruxes. Their mission is to destroy the Dark Lord once and for all, even as the ultimate battle ensues within the hallowed halls of Hogwarts.

Remember the times when you were a child, and you craved a second bowl of ice cream? Your mom, in a rare burst of indulgence, lets you have another even though she knows she shouldn't. You gobble it down, only to be left wishing that you'd stopped at the first one. That's the sort of feeling I had with "The Deathly Hallows". As a bona fide nerd, I relished the grandeur of the second part and the intimacy of the first. But in the end, it felt like too much of a good thing. Similar to overindulging in ice cream, the six-hour finale began to feel overwhelming when perhaps a simpler, leaner three-hour conclusion would have sufficed.

Notwithstanding this, director David Yates and his team undeniably hit a home run with their cinematic execution. However, there's another decision that left me puzzled - the replacement of Nicholas Hooper with Alexandre Desplat for the musical score. Desplat, well-known for his stellar work in "Fantastic Mr. Fox," felt like an underutilized asset in this film. His influence was barely felt, save for the end when he reprises John Williams' earlier themes.

Despite these aspects, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" is a fitting end to a much-loved series, even if it felt like an overload of ice cream at times.

You should not watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 if... Whats the deal with...
Warning: The following may contain spoilers:

What's the deal with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2"? Suddenly, it seems like everyone forgot how to Apparate during the battle. You'd think with all those Death Eaters and chaos, someone would remember, "Hey, we can teleport!" Imagine how useful that would be. One minute you're in the Room of Requirement, the next, you pop up behind Voldemort, give him a surprise that's more shocking than finding out the truth about Snape. "Hey Voldy, guess who?

Don't even get me started on the Room of Requirement. It turns into whatever you need, unless you need it not to catch on fire, I guess. "Oh, you wanted a fire extinguisher room? Sorry, we thought you said 'fiery inferno.'"
